"Rather than simply replacing one operator with another, we see this transition as an opportunity to step back, take a fresh look at the space and create an experience that better serves the community for the future." That line comes from the Sun City Hilton Head Community Association's October 13 update on the 2027 Hidden Cypress renovation. It explains this winter better than any closure notice does.
Hidden Cypress Golf Course closes for renovation starting Monday, January 4. The clubhouse restaurant will be renovated and refreshed during the closure, with its concept reconsidered from the ground up. For the next stretch, golf and dining move to Okatie Creek and Argent Lakes. Meanwhile the Hidden Cypress clubhouse gets redesigned, and residents have a formal way to weigh in.
Jameson's Charhouse serves its last night on New Year's Eve
Jameson's Charhouse at Hidden Cypress closes Thursday, December 31. The association made a point of saying the restaurant provider asked for the change. With the course closing "and other considerations," the provider asked to take the Hidden Cypress location out of its contract.
The same provider is staying in Sun City. Its partnership continues at The Clubhouse at Okatie Creek and AL's Pub at Argent Lakes. The association also said it reached out to other restaurant providers about running Hidden Cypress, and those providers chose not to take it on.
With no operator lined up, Hidden Cypress goes into renovation with its dining concept still open.
Where the routine moves in the meantime
Once Jameson's at Hidden Cypress closes, the community's full-service dining runs through two rooms, plus a lounge that changed its hours this month. Here's how they line up, based on each venue's posted schedule:
| Venue | Posted hours | What's on offer |
|---|---|---|
| The Clubhouse at Okatie Creek | Monday–Saturday, 11 a.m.–8 p.m. | Lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch |
| AL's Pub at Argent Lakes | Tuesday–Saturday, noon–8 p.m. for bar and kitchen | Pub and pizzeria menu |
| The Brackish Bar & Lounge | 8 a.m.–6 p.m. since November 5 | New coffee and breakfast menu coming soon |
The Clubhouse at Okatie Creek is the one that matters most for a standing dinner reservation. It's the remaining room that does lunch and dinner six days a week, plus brunch. AL's Pub at Argent Lakes is closed Sundays and Mondays, so a Monday evening plan points toward Okatie Creek.
The Brackish change is the quieter shift. Starting November 5, the lounge moved to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the association says a menu of coffee and breakfast items will be available soon. Before this change, the association's dining page listed Brackish as an afternoon-and-evening spot, open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. The new hours turn it into a morning stop just as Hidden Cypress goes dark.
Two courses carry the golf for a while
Sun City has three courses, and the renovation takes out one of its two full-length tracks. Hidden Cypress is an 18-hole, par-72 Mark McCumber design. That leaves two courses for the duration.
- Okatie Creek is also an 18-hole, par-72 layout designed by PGA Tour professional Mark McCumber. For anyone who plays Hidden Cypress regularly, it's the closest like-for-like round.
- Argent Lakes is an 18-hole executive course at par 61. That's a shorter round, and it can fit a winter afternoon when the light goes early.
Tee times still go through the community's resident tee-time portal, which isn't open to the public. With one full-length course out of play, golfers who like a particular slot at Okatie Creek may want to book earlier than usual.
New leadership is running the program during the closure. Troon and the Board of Directors named John McLaughlin Director of Golf Operations, effective October 12. He's a PGA Professional who was most recently Director of Golf at The Club at Savannah Harbor. Before that he was Head Golf Professional at Haig Point Golf Club on Daufuskie Island, and earlier Director of Golf at Mountain Vista Golf Club at Sun City in Palm Desert, California. The association's announcement called his arrival "a new chapter for golf at Sun City Hilton Head."
The association also set out four principles for long-term golf planning ahead of the November 5 golf town hall at Magnolia Hall:
"Future planning will be guided by four principles: business, logic, fairness and balance."
That framing comes from the association's Membership Announcements page. The page lists the town hall's topics as course conditions, operations, long-term planning, sustainability and an overview of the Hidden Cypress renovation.
The clubhouse gets drawn while residents are elsewhere
While the course is closed, the Hidden Cypress restaurant will be renovated and refreshed with help from RealFood, a national hospitality consulting company. The association describes RealFood's job as helping "rethink the facility and overall dining experience."
The association has described what it wants the room to become:
"Our vision is to create more than just a place to enjoy a meal. We want it to be a welcoming, comfortable gathering place where residents can meet friends, catch up with neighbors, enjoy a drink or a meal, and where golfers can relax before or after a round."
That passage, from the October 13 update, names three uses for one room: meeting friends, a drink or a meal, and a place for golfers to settle in before or after a round.
There's a set channel for weighing in. The association set up a dedicated feedback address, [email protected], and says a resident survey is coming soon. It has also said the Board and Association management want resident ideas to help "shape the future of Hidden Cypress."
The restaurant closes December 31, the course closes January 4, and renovation follows. The concept takes shape early, while the survey is out and the inbox is open. A resident who wants a breakfast counter, a bigger bar, room for club gatherings or a patio for golfers should speak up during that early window.
The dates between now and January 4
Several other Sun City schedules shift through the end of the year. Here they are in order, from the association's announcements page:
- Thursday, November 12, 1 p.m. The Annual Meeting of the Membership in Pinckney Hall, where election results are announced and the Finance Committee presents the 2027 budget.
- Monday, November 16. The Lakehouse indoor and outdoor pools reopen after the pool improvements project. It's also the deadline for Chartered Clubs and Registered Community Groups to request 2027 feature space in SunSations.
- Monday, November 30. The croquet lawns reopen after overseeding.
- Friday, December 4, 3 p.m. The drop-off deadline at Palmetto Commons for Salvation Army Angel Tree gifts. Put them in a gift bag or plastic bag with the Angel Wish List Card attached, and don't wrap them.
- Thursday, December 31. Last night for Jameson's Charhouse at Hidden Cypress.
- Monday, January 4. The Hidden Cypress Golf Course renovation begins.
Tickets for December events went on sale November 4, online and at Lifestyle Services in Palmetto Commons. Anyone planning a holiday outing will want to lock in seats before Jameson's at Hidden Cypress closes.
